The long, grassy National Mall is home to iconic monuments including the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. At the eastern end is the domed U.S. Capitol, and the White House is to the north. It's also flanked by Smithsonian museums, and its lawns and pathways are often crowded with school groups, joggers and softball teams. Nearby, the Tidal Basin reservoir is known for its blossoming cherry trees.

When Facebook approached us to create an enjoyable and permanent installation for their new office in Washington D.C., we were beyond excited to see magic we could make for them.
After a few meetings and workshops, we came to the conclusion that with so many photos taken of the Washington DC monuments, it’s tough to get a photo that truly stands out…until now.

For Facebook DC we decided to take a unique twist on the iconic monuments DC is known and loved for.

Let’s make it like a school for ants!

We thought it would be so much fun to be able to walk around the monuments as a giant and be one amongst the monuments. How would that not make for a cool photo moment! Of course we knew we had to be very picky with which monuments we would show to make the most memorable photos, as there were some budget constraints and we had to be very clever with it.
Another hurdle was when it came to sizes of the built monuments. How big should they be? How big is too big? We need to make sure they are somewhat to scale so its not awkward either. And of course we had to include those all to iconic Cherry Blossom Trees.

Construction begins

It wasn’t easy to pick and choose which monuments to show and we went through many iterations of material usage, sizing, and layouts.
Starting with the simple, but very fun, building of mini 3D versions of DC monuments for guests to pose with. This creates an all-in-one DC photo moment, giving visitors a photo of all the highlights in a totally new and ownable way. Guests appear as giants towering over our mini monuments. The setup mainly focuses on the monuments around The National Mall. To keep it fun and help fit it in the space, we took creative liberties with spacing, scale, and relative sizes. As a beautiful accent, we hung cherry blossom branches, creating a canopy over the city.

Some early iteration and tests.

After adapting to a few unforseen constraints, we pulled together what we knew would be the perfect installation for the Facebook DC office.

We might be giants

When all was said and done and built, our team and the Facebook DC team couldn’t have been happier. The Facebook DC office was excited, as you can see in the below images, for their new permanent installation for them and guests to take part in and take home with them.
